Model B Bearings

I just got a 1946 B an it had water in the cylinders. I pulled the head and block and pistons and found the connecting rod and main bearings are poured babbit an not the 2 peace replaceable bearing that I've seen in over haul kits. Is the babbit normal or is this some farmers repair job.

I see rod bearing and main bearing for model B for sale in this an other part sites. For std. an over sized. With the babbit bearing would I need then re-poured.

All B models the main bearings should be a 2 pc. babbited shell inserts with 2 shim packs for adjustments, Rods would of just had babbit poured directly onto the rod and shim packs for adjustment..

Now there are always exceptions to the rule were early A models had babbited shells (maybe brass shells) on the rods and maybe mains too. Not sure but I think the D model had these too. The very early H rods had inserts the rest had babbit. All the H's had solid round bushing type non adjustable mains. The last of the A models could of had insert rod bearings and solid aluminum bushing type mains like the model 60 had. There is a serial number break in the parts book.

Ron,
Your B has the original rods with casting# B1770R. You need to find some good used rods with casting# B3201R. The part# for them is AB4626R. You'll also need insert bearings for them which years ago came in .002, .004, .020, and .022 undersize. Use plastigage to determine which undersized bearings you need. The part #'s for them are in the B parts catalog, PC-330. You need to first pull the crank and have the journals trued up.

I haven't pulled the main bearing yet but I can see the edge of the housing that looks like babbit not shell bearing. Its confusing what I see for sale on the parts site because most offer the shell bearings for the B. I may be able to adjust the shims for the correct fit but the edge of the babbit on the rod looks close to the steel edge. Who pours babbit bearing.
