RPMs JD 720D

My rpm meter on my 720D is not working and I was wondering if there is a simple method to determine rpms without buying another gage. I want to adjust the rpms to the proper setting at full throttle.

Not without buying or borrowing a hand held tach and check it right at the crank. The belt pulley cover has a dimple made in the center just for this. Or a more modern set up with the reflective tape.

I bought a used oil regulator on ebay thinking the spring in mine might be bad. and JD doesn't sell the spring alone any more. I haven't installed it yet, I hope this solves the problem.

This says 720D so no spark plugs to hook up to except if it has a pony motor and wants to check it's speed ?

I have a rpm sensor that clamps on the injector line and measures the rpm by the line swelling from the injection pulse. However, on the 720D, you'd have to have the pump cover off. Not impossible, but a hand tach on the crankshaft would be much easier and cheaper.
