I bought a 40s and got it home today. I started pressure washing it and it has yellow paint under the green everywhere it got thru the green. What is the chance a 40 s would be painted commercial yellow? I have heard that they used some yellow primer but have also heard they never used primer, just green paint.. It runs good and the lift, brakes, clutch, transmission and motor seem fine but it does have the 420 shift lever cause it's very short and in 2nd and 3rd is right under the steering wheel. I am going to need a few parts for this 40, but all in all it seems like a good tractor

Serial number ? Have you ran the number with the Two Cylinder Club ? Has the tractor been assembled from salvaged parts ?

I forgot where the serial number is on a 40s. I don't know any history on it other that the guy I bought it from never knew about the yellow paint, every where on the trans, and rear shows yellow paint underneath but not on the engine. Going to do a little more discovery tomorrow.

My 40T also has a tower shift quadrant. I think all the tractors I have painted (3 john deeres) have had some sort of yellow primer.

Every Dubuque two cylinder I've ever seen is yellow underneath. And no it doesn't look like primer because it has a sheen but it is.

That makes sense now why the rear and trans are yellow underneath. Thanks for the replies. I'm going to need some parts for this tractor so keep looking, Thanks, Nat
