1020 Hydraulic Issue

While disking a couple of plots yesterday, it seemed the power was down a little and I noticed the engine temp was about 10 degrees warmer than normal. When I removed my ear plugs, the hydraulic pump seemed pretty noisy. I lowered the loader boom to pick up some rocks, the noise went away. As I started trying to figure out what was going on, I could tell the engine speed would pick up when operating the hydraulics. Also noticed the tranny case, rear end, and joystick were warm to the touch, more so than usual. The pump seems to be dragging the engine down. If I barely cracked the joystick to raise the boom, the engine speed would pick up and the pump would quiet down. I drove it the 3 miles home, while just pulling back on the control enough to stop the pump from making noise, but not raise the boom. The engine power and temperature were normal. When I parked it in the barn and shut the engine off, it stopped turning very quickly. When I went to restart it, cranking was very slow. Any idea what the heck is going on? Before I started the day, fluids were full, and operations seemed normal. This is on a 66 1020 with a 13 GPM pump, a JD 37 loader, and a Brand joystick valve with regen and float.

With 3 pt raised, engine running look in hyd filler hole behind seat for dripping oil. dripping oil indicates failed rockshaft control valve seals. Noise at hyd pump could be worn pump drive coupler.

Observed oil dripping from above. Is the failure of the control valve O-rings causing the pump to continuously pump, heating up the oil? Jdparts lists a rock shaft rebuild seal kit, with a cover gasket, anything else needed?

It appears after viewing kit in PC that kit + gasket will have every thing you need. Another place to check for internal hyd leakage is power steering valve. Is your FEL JS valve in a closed center configuration?????

"Is your FEL JS valve in a closed center configuration?????"

Yes, it's a 9-7401 Brand w/closed center kit. What symptoms would there be if not? I'll double check the configuration.

After reading service manual PS troubleshooting portion, there doesn't appear to be any problem. Steering is one finger easy in both directions, with no binding or drift. Suggestions?
