if you had to choose is a 148 or a 58 better for on a say 4020 or 4230 also is there any thing to know about a 4230 quad trans as in not to us a certain gear hard

On those bigger tractors find a 158. I seen one advertised here or on Ohio craigslist not long ago ? About the 2 main places I look at.
I have a 158 on a 4020 gas and it has really been a good combo ! I like the extra lift height and reach out front over what a 148 would have. On the 4020 rear tires filled with fluid and hang a 115 blade on the rear 3 pt. and it is the perfect amount of counter weight. Should be good to lift about 4000 lbs. to full height. I could lift a complete late model B off a trailer or an A with a few items missing.

According to Tractordata a 4020 with 148 will pick up 3100#s & 158 will pick up 3800#s at the bucket pins.

FYI I just looked and there is still one listed on the Columbus ohio craigslist. Go to the farm & garden and search 158 it will pop up.
I know nothing about it other than I saw the ad.

A 158 is a heavier duty loader over a 148. While the design is similar the steel is thicker on a 158. I have had a 158 on a 4020 for 27 years and have had zero problems. They are a balanced team. Mike

I'd be looking for a 158. I don't have any complaints on ours. Isn't the 58 the one with only 1 bucket cylinder ? There are a lot newer numbered loaders that are likely better yet but I don't know the model numbers.
