4430 air conditioning

Hi guys,
I am working on the air conditioning of the new to me 4430. There is no cold air coming out. The compressor kicks on and off, so
it appears the fuse isn't burned out yet. I have cleaned the condenser and cab filter. I have checked all the lines for the A/C.
The one spot I see an oil residue is on the compressor. It is the opposite side of the fan belt and around where you would
recharge the system. I am totally ignorant to air conditioning so excuse the questions. What would be leaking on the compressor
there? I can't figure out what I could tighten. There looks to be a plate with a single bolt that holds the two lines going out
of the compressor. Could it leak there? Is it possible to leak out of around the 4 bolts that holds the compressor together? Is
this a sign my compressor is shot? Lastly, I was told it was a 134 system. How do I tell? I look forward to your insight.
Thanks for your help.

If your tractor has been changed to R134A it should have smaller male quick coupler fittings that resemble hyd male tips. R134a can leak at any connection,AC component or hose. I'd suggest to get a set of gauges with R134a couplers and check both high & low pressures or get a knowledgeable AC tech to check pressures. Also install a manual coolant cut-off valve in heater hose because factory heater control valves have been known to by-pass hot water affecting AC cooling efficiency.

It sounds like the compressor is leaking Freon around the rear housing, this is a common problem with that style compressor, I just had one doing that here last week, I have been changing them over to a new style compressor from AP air, much better set up. So with your tractor that rear housing has let Freon leak out making it too low on Freon to cool but not low enough to blow the compressor fuse, the new system also has a better Hi/Low switch set up. You are going to need to have the system..

The older JDs had a history of lines rusting out after about 12-14 years of age. I had two of them...4430 and 4240. Those lines are within the cab corners.

My 2 cents. For all Sanden conversions I add the AP Air #220-045 relay for a more positive lock up of compressor clutch. Also when replacing comp belt adj strap if old strap bolt is stuck, rather than risk twisting off, cut head of bolt off and use remaining bolt as a stud to retain new strap that comes w/kit. Ones I've run into are fully threaded w/no need to "tap" new threads. Hold your applause please! lol

You right on the strong chance of the tightener anchor bolt twisting off, they are a soft bolt to start with, and being an all thread bolt makes it even worse. I never thought about cutting the head off and using a nut,, that's a good idea, I have been using the AP Air kits lately,, in fact I just put my 5th one on yesterday, a great savings over buying from the Mega Dealer...
