4020 Solenoid Question

Hey guys. I'm still finagling around with a 1972 4020 that just decided to not start again. There's a post around here where I asked a lot of questions. We sorta narrowed it down to the starter solenoid. It's a piggyback type, on a Delco 12V starter.

The posts on the new solenoid are arranged horizontally, instead of vertically. That makes it nearly impossible to install with the copper(?) bracket that is used to connect what was the bottom terminal to the starter. It makes connecting the positive battery cable practically impossible too. The previous 2 solenoids I've had on it had the terminal arranged vertically.

Does anybody have any idea why they are like this now? I have ordered 2 of these. One from All States Ag, and another that I actually ordered from the John Deere dealer. (They had no clue.) I'm just wondering if I'm looking for a different part number or what.

What's the part number of solenoid you have? R11292 or AR77255 are the part numbers listed in parts catalog. Large posts are supposed to be in a line straight up & down.

Good catch but my mind was tuned in on diesel starter except for part numbers I posted it's really immaterial which engine his 4020 has as solenoid large post are still in line one above the other.

It's a diesel. The JD part number that I got is AR77255

Although some parts photo aren't exactly correct this is the starter photo for starter with AR77255 solenoid.

AR77255 is listed to fit the following tractors and the tractor solenoids I'm familiar with the large posts on solenoid in the list are in a line with one above the other.

Solenoid, Key # 29, DEERE #R11292, (DELCO-REMY NO. 1115510 OR 1115540).

You can use the Delco numbers to order the solenoid at an auto parts store.

I guess I'll go back and talk to the JD place and see if I get anywhere with them. If not, I'll try an auto parts place. At least I know it's the correct part number. I always end up with something rediculous when I order stuff.

I just now looked at you post,, I have the solenoid here that you need,, I keep an extra one on hand..

I'm going to go back to JD with the pictures and see if they have R11292. If I can't get anywhere with them, I'll contact you about it. Thanks. (This is so silly.)

In PC 1116 - 4000 and 4020 (s.n. 201,000- ) Tractors

AR77255 is shown to fit starter AR78538(DELCO-REMY NO.1113391).

R11292 is shown to fit starter AR62267 (SUB FOR AR55638) (DELCO-REMY NO.1113402)

I don't know if solenoids will interchange but Tim might know.

You need to "Spoon Feed" most of the dealer parts boys,,a picture and the correct part number should do it,,and of course have the correct change ready. The mega dealer in my area has a crew of young people that know very little about what they are doing,, and of course they are getting paid very little $10-$12 per hour,,so you can't expect much...

I think you are right about that. I usually try to at least have the part numbers ready. I'm definitely taking your picture that shows the solenoid and the box it came out of!

And I have no idea which Delco-Remy starter I have. Whoever painted the tractor painted over the label (if it was even readable).

Just to follow up, I went back to the JD place, with the picture of the correct solenoid with its box labeled with the part number. Turns out they actually had this one in stock, and even owed me a partial refund because it was cheaper than the part I got originally with the horizontal posts, that they had to order.

You couldn't tell from the JD parts page, but looking at Google Images, AR77255 on most sites that had pictures, had horizontal posts. Pictures of R11292 mostly showed the vertical arrangement.

Thanks for all your help. Now, to see if this solves my starting problem....
