4440 quad range 2 speed is backwards

I bought a 4440 quad range. Guy said he had somebody work on 2 speed. Now it shifts backward (1 is 2, 2 is 1.....3 is 4, 4 is 3). He said he lived with it that way for several years. I would like to put it back correctly. What could possibly be wrong?

Thanks

I think you need to seriously look at the shift linkage under RH side of tractor.

Let's start by seeing if the lever on shaft Key #28, protruding from the clutch housing is pointing downwards as shown in the drawing or if the "wrench" got that shaft in 180? off and the lever is pointing upwards.

If that isn't it, somehow one of the two "bellcranks" in the linkage have somehow been reversed. (IF that's even possible)

I was thinking about this too Bob, but I think there is a flat spot on the shaft that keeps this from happening,, but Yes that seems like the only answer to this problem...

How about if you flipped Lever Key # 30 over from left to right, then rotated shaft Key # 28 180??

Is it possible to swap planet sets end
for end if you have unit all apart? On
a 4430 you have direct and under drive.
IN 4440 DIRECT AND OVER DRIVE. That
would be the endgate.

Our 4440 has been that way for years. There's
three wrong and one right combination on the shaft
and roll pin. That was long before IPhone pics that
help with how it came apart. We figured we would
get a chance to fix it back when we went back in at
some point, but knock on wood haven't had a
reason to. The guys that have posted about the
cause with the shaft and lever are exactly right,
because the next one we did, we experimented with
the different wrong ways to put it together.

Maybe they got a used 40 series planatery,, I don't think a 30 series can be set up backwards..You are correct with them being different and I think a 40 will bolt into a 30 but I have never tryed it...

Craig has confermed our thoughts,, I know that years ago I got the wrong top shaft shift cam, Deere sent me one for a sychro range and I put it in a Quad range, that puts 1-2 where 3-4 is and vise versa..Darn it,, I went down through the cab floor and changed it..I will not forget that mistake...

Thanks guys for all the help and information! I hopefully get time tomorrow or Sunday to look at it.

Thanks again!!!!!

Brian

I am a farmer and not a tractor splitter or certified JD mechanic but was wondering if a unit from a 4430 would bolt up?

In September 1974 my Dad took delivery of a 4430 with syncro-range. Factory had installed shift cam from quad and dealer had to change. At least this is an exterior linkage fix--most probably. We do not know exactly what kind of work previous owner did.

Tim, Deere did us the same way on a shift can too. Aggravating, but if your used to a quad it's more natural anyway. It was on a 4230 syncro 4 post that gets a new operator every year and is used in rough service. I drew it with a sharpie pen and didn't worry about it. Sometimes you run into those operators that don't even notice when you switch from excavator to backhoe controls. They just grab levers and learn it again every morning. Just like a goose that wakes up everyday in a brand new world. Yep I've had that kinda week!

If you have a linkage issue like we have been talking about you will need to split it at the clutch housing to correct it...

Ok I check part #28.... when viewed from in front of rear tire, it is in the 8 o clock position..... with the tractor in 1st gear, #28 is in a rearward position. When shifted to 2nd, it moves down and forward more like a 7 o clock position. Is this right??

Yes that part is correct,, I have one here in the shop,, and here is a pic out of the 4440 book.
