4430 Clutch

Hello and thanks for all the wonderful advice I have received here! I've been having several hydraulic problems with this tractor but this is what is happening now. My clutch feels soft and it wants to grind a little when I put it in gear. I checked pressure at clutch port and it was around 150. It seems to take a sec or so for pressure to build when I crank it. After I mashed clutch and released it went higher. Around 180 at app 2000rpm. I checked pto clutch pressure-180, and pto brake pressure-180. I checked lube pressure and it seems to be ok. No tach but about 50# at app 2000rpm. Any ideas on soft clutch and grinding? Thanks, John.

For the feel of the clutch pedal it should feel the same with or with out the engine running,Have you checked to make sure a stick or some thing is not wedged into the linkage around the pedal spring??....There are a couple springs in the valve that go bad that usually causes a jumpy clutch...but your pressure is acting up and this can be caused by a failing clutch operating piston seal going bad,,,and along with this the clutch plates could be coming apart...I think that you need to split it and service the clutch and piston seals..

I have checked the linkage and saw no problems. The clutch operating piston seal that you speak of, is this part of the perma clutch? I had this clutch rebuilt about 100 hrs ago. I did let a friend use this tractor for a couple of months and I think a kid could have run it some without much adult supervision. Could he have torn up a clutch that quick?

Not likely that the kid hurt it ,,they are a very good and tough system,,some people don't re-seal the pistons when they re-build,, and of course maybe the set up adjustment didn't go well... When I get one like this I start over and re-check and re-set everything as I go back together. There is a PTO re-tracting ring,, this ring returns the PTO piston and race that can wear allowing the race to slip through the retainer, then it wobbles around on the shaft causing issues sorta like you have,, again you need to start at the beginning so that you know..Item #7 is the retainer,,#8 is the race that I am talking about

Tim,

Do you think this would be the first step to take? There are no other test that I should do before splitting tractor? Thanks!

Try to get a pressure reading on the clutch,PTO clutch with them on then off first if you can,, but if it was here I would be putting the stands on it, cracking it open and inspecting the parts, remember you will need a set up tool to set the clutch back up, no way around it,,you could take the assembly with the flywheel to a dealer and have them set it up on the bench. remove the top link bracket and pull the transmission drive shaft.. before you split
