I am looking into buying this tractor. What known problems does it have? Is it a easy starting tractor? It has a 146 loader will this be a good set up for handling round bales? Will it handle a 10ft shredder? Would you recommend this tractor?

Good tractors.Start tractor get up to operating temp check for unusual noises, oil leaks etc.Make sure everything functions as it should.Do an engine oil sample.Get test strips to analyze coolant. And most importantly inspect hydraulic system...which means dump the oil inspect sump screen and the filter and make sure loader is plumbed right per JD recommendations.I think their around 60 hp.

Hours and overall condition mean everything. And a good maintenence history.Should handle round bales ok if properly weighted.

You cannot run a 10 ft. shredder or flail mower I believe with a 2440. They are right around 60 PTO HP. We have a 7 foot flail mower in our orchard and I would not run it with the 2440 we have. I believe for a flail mower it's 10 HP per every foot of mower.

I agree with PMS on checking sump screen in the transmission, strips for coolant, and oil sample. That will give you some maintenance history right there. The 2440 I have has over 10,000 hours, starts up fine, no blow by and is the original engine. No loader on ours and I don't move round bales. Ours has the high/low on the dash and I really like that option.

A little light for big 5x6 rounders. Would be fine for 4x5 or 5x5, IMO. My 2550 with calcium in the rears is right at 9500lbs and grunts on the 5x6 rounders.

I ran a 5 foot flail mower with my JD M. Took some really tall out of control grass to about kill it. After the first round I could take a partial cut. It did better than I ever thought it would.

You have received some very different opinions, that is normal, I usually wait a couple of days, tally up the votes and make a decision.

I'm not gonna make a vote,, I am a bad influence on Dubuque tractors.. I will say when they are good they are great ..but when they are bad they are very bad..

This 7 foot Rears Pak-Flail we have makes the JD 2555 grunt when you put the power to it. We take all the pruning's from the fruit trees and windrow them in the middle of the road then chop them up with the mower. I suppose if you were running a rotary mower in just grass you could handle a lot more mower than chopping up what we do.

I am always amazed at what my MT can do for work. My wife is nudging me to sell it but I just can't get rid of it!

Is this the basstard with all that Bosh electric on it? Gobs and gobs of fussy little stuff, all imported way back when the thing was made. One of those models was Europe, simple drawings didn't match, a schematic was useless.

I have a 2640, nothing to gush over that's for sure. But my neighbor has either a 22 or 24, it wasn't worn out so cant say how durable the drive line was but has about 3 relays to turn the headlights on and 3 more just to start it.
My electronics guy who is Edisons nephew just went wow. At least the 26 had a wire from switch to the starter.

There are early ones made in Dubuque and late ones made in Germany. Early ones have way simpler wiring. And yes, there are different manuals for each.

I don't remember these alleged 3 relays each for starting & head lights for a Mannheim built utility tractor. Can you please elaborate??

It wasn't meant to be taken literally, there was a bunch of snot on them, looked like the same scheme they had in French Mack trucks.

The edit doesn't work for some reason,,but that stuff may work great when it was all brandy new but is now 40 yrs old.
One of the best things we ever did was abandoned the 3020 and 4020 factory wiring in favor of 12v with a Nippon Denso starter and a 1 wire alternator. All mechanical gages thru Murphy except for fuel.
The wiring would have near stuffed a bucket, the oem harness had 30 or more little pins in it, one day I looked at how many times I had jumped and said,, wtf.
We made battery boxes, tossed those suitcase things in favor of hi power car batteries, way better.
Custom cripple step.

What you previously stated about 3 relays for each circuit(lights & starting) is how untrue rumors get started.

Granted wiring schematics on a JD Mannheim built tractor with a cab resembled a spider web
