John Deere 4010 w/46a loader, What is it Worth?

I am looking at a 1963 gasoline John Deere 4010 with a 46a loader tomorrow and am wondering how much such a tractor is worth. The current owner is asking $5200. He says the tractor runs and shifts well, though the carb will most likely need new gaskets or to be rebuilt. It has a 3 pt hitch and dual remotes. The tach shows 1700 hours though he estimates the real number to be about 2300+ as the hour meter stopped working. Tires are reportedly at 50-60% and from the pictures it appears the front of the hood has some noticeable dents/damage. The current owner says he will trade the tractor in at a dealer on Tuesday if it doesn't sell this weekend. What potential problems should I look out for and what should I offer?

Thanks,

3 years ago I bought a '67 2510 gas with 46a loader for $4800. Tires were 40%, tractor runs fine,3700 hours on working tach. I'm happy with
my purchase.

I would try for between 4000 and 4500 dollars and then if successful line up a Deere combine engine to go in unless you want the gas engine.

If it does have those low hours the rear tires might still be originals and in poor condition, but the rest of the tractor would be in much better than average condition. You can tell if it has 2,400 or 12,400 hours by how loose and worn the controls are. I don't know if a 50+ year old wet cylinder sleeves could have cavitation or O-ring problems in those engines. I like the Sycro-range transmission for loader work, some people don't. Strong power steering and power brakes help too. Road gear is around 18MPH if you need to drive it home.

$4000 for the tractor and $1000 for a hydraulic loader doesn't sound out of line if they are in usable condition. It won't be any cheaper from the dealer. Depending on your needs, I'd start at $4500 if it checks out and I wanted to buy it. How many hour a year will you use it? If it's less than 200 hours per year the difference in fuel consumpsion compared to a diesel might not matter.

Keep in mind that any trade-in will reduce the sales tax on a purchase. At 7 percent sales tax a $4000 trade-in will reduce sales tax by $280 and a $5000 trade-in will reduce sales tax by $350. You will need to offer that much more than the dealer's trade-in offer for your offer to have the same value to the seller. Some some sellers are aware of that and some are not.

It is doubtful that it has only 17-2300 hours on it. Keep in mind it is 53 years old. In that timeframe an hour meter can be changed or flipped around (meaning 10000+ hours) very easily. It would be a bit
like finding a 1963 truck with only 15,000 miles on it.

Anyway, the hours aren't as important on something like that as is the general condition. If well maintained, it is worth more than barely running- no matter what the hour meter says.

I doubt the hours are right as it is over fifty years old. The price is reasonable to about market. If it does not have a zenith carb I would replace the one it has with a zenith as they are a much better carb. Tom

[MOST} but not all JD 6cyl.gas tractors don't sell or run well. The dealer wont put $3500 and that's about all its worth. The hours if low help but not that much.
