charging two batteries

I have a JD 2640 with two batteries. They are hooked in parallel. They are fairly new batteries and I mistakenly left the accessory light on for a couple weeks and now they're dead. Can I hook a charger to both of them at the same time or should I disconnect them first.

NO need to disconnect them.

If they are in OK shape (not used up or have been frozen) they will charge just fine.

If one is "good" and the other isn't, that's another matter.

If completely dead for that length of a time . The batteries my take a charge . However the capacity has been lessened and the service life shortened .
When in there rooting around . Run a new extra "ground " cable from a battery (-) down to a starter mounting bolt . You will be amazed how much faster the motor will crank over. The factory "ground " return uses bolted connections through sheet metal, not a good electrical path.

To add to B&D's advice- you'll see on some newer applications a separate cable from each battery's positive post to the starter solenoid, and a separate cable from each battery's negative post to good frame ground on, or near the starter.

I am not sure if this is correct but I always hook up to starter[where cables attach] and ground on step thinking it will charge both batteries evenly.
