JD H Shifter Lever

I have a couple of JD H tractors and I really enjoy playing with them. In fact the first tractor that I ever drove was a little H. I have a problem with one of the shift levers. It will sometimes come out of the transmission and then I need to fiddle around with it to get it back in. How hard is it to fix this problem? Do I need to have it repaired by an expert or is this something that I should be able to do myself?

Thanks for your time.

I used to own an "H", but never had shifter issues, so I can't offer any much advice other than a link to the parts catalog (if you don't have it already) so you can look at what pieces are involved there.

I'm GUESSING little snapring (Key #3) is missing or out of it's groove. Edge of groove may be worn "rounded", as well.

Looks like the whole transmission cover has to come off to fix that.

those are famous for rusting out as water gets down in there and sets. There's a piece of leather in there originally and that doesn't last too long. The ball socket could be rusted through allowing the stick to come out.But as the other gentleman said it could be that the snap ring came off.Either way the tranny cover has to come off.Ron

The ball socket rusts out. Mine was like that when I got it. I put a new one on but that was a long time ago. Don't know if they're still available. Take the transmission cover off. Three wired bolts and a gasket if I recall.

Really not a hard fix. It was explained real clearly in the late Pat Browning's H Restoration Guide. I think the book is still available from Charles Lindstrom who advertises in Green Magazine. If you want to email me I will try to copy the two pages that covers it and I will mail them to you. Not very computer literate, so I can't post them on here.

Usually snap ring out of groove from worn groove.
needs one welded in. Follow advice of other poster
for how-to info.

What I did on my G is I took a washer and slid it down to where the snap ring goes and I tack welded the washer to the stick, still working today.

The socket is definitely rusted out if your lever will come out of place. The ball is most likely pitted bad, too. The ball and spring are the same as a late B. Give Charles Lindstrom a call 816 232 5868... he has parts and has forgotten more about an H John Deere than I'll ever know. Get Pat's book from him... he got the rights to it from the Browning Family and is the Only source that I am aware of.

Last time I talked to Lindstrom he had sold but I
think he still has gaskets and book.
