520 power steering problems

Have you ever bought a tractor and thought you got a great deal, and then you start fixing a few small problems, a you find more and more and then big problems?
Well I bought one. Jd 520.
I got it starting and running good. Has power steering, and when the throttle is increased, the front wheels go hard to the left. I loosened the 4 bolts and tapped the valve, started tractor and went to the right. now it seems there is no assist at all. Fluid level is a little low. And noticed a fluid on the belt, looks like the front seal on the pump is leaking.
I would like to get this to work for this summer and tear pump and front end a part next winter. Is there a way to increase the pressure? Open to all advice.
What is the number of the manual that explains this system?

The powersteering mnaual is SM2050

I suggest trying to adjust your valve again. Make a reference mark to show the current alignment. Loosen the bolts just enough and tap it to get it steering right in both directions. It does not take much at all, and you can do it with the tractor running

jdjack, I feel your pain. I have two 520's and both have
needed allot of attention to get them back to being a dependable
tractor. On the flip side I really like the model and figure
at nearly 60 years old they have earned some work done on them.
There is allot of information on this site concerning the power
steering and well worth searching it out. On one of mine the
lower seal on the unit is leaking letting oil run down the pedestal.
I have found someone who has overhauled several units so will take it off and
take it to him this summer. I would hesitate increasing the pressure of your
power steering as that may cause a bigger leak at the pump.
Good luck with your project, I think you will really enjoy the tractor
when you get it repaired the way you want it.

To me it just sounds like you're adjusting it too far either way. It really doesn't take much movement at all, probably to the point of not seeing it. I don't completely loosen the bolts, I have them just loose enough that I can tap the valve with a hammer and move it.

I am barely moving it. I have adjusted on my 620 before. There must be something else wrong. because when its centered, it doesn't move the best to the right and very hard to move to the left

A service manual will help. Before you try adjusting the valve back or forward any more, make sure there is NO end play in the worm gear. The end play cannot be tested at the steering shaft end. Any end play in the worm causes the valve to move the wrong way, (this is why the power steering on these two cylinders will hunt while sitting there running), making it nearly impossible to tap the valve to the sweet spot. I always leave the valve slightly snug and tap it into position with the engine running.

I ordered the manual today. By the worm gear, do you mean the piece that the steering shaft goes into and has the pin to connect the two? If so it has a lot of end play.

Yes that is the worm, and if it has a lot of endplay it would definitely cause the problems you're having. The book calls for something like .001 or .0015 endplay for the worm

Brandon

Jdjack, that is connected to the worm gear, but you can not check for end play on that end of the worm shaft as that end moves fore and aft to activate the valve which controls the power steering. Checking the worm end play is some what complicated. The manual you ordered will show you how that is done. The one thing I disagree with the book is that the book calls for .001 to .0015 end play. Any end play is counter productive,I always set the worm at .001 - .002 preload.
