Will it ever run again?

Drove 4 hours south and paid too much for it, but I hope to get it running for cultivating this spring. Good news is the engine is loose and seems to have good compression. Might just need putting back together and a set of tires.... All the tin & parts are in the pickup box. Serial number 6046828

(quoted from post at 05:49:42 01/31/16) Hope you don't get discouraged easy...

I'm pretty confident. The fact that the engine is loose really bolsters said confidence. The guy who had it claims it was running when he started taking it apart for repainting 10 years ago. I figure when a fellow says "10 years ago" he usually means 15 or 20 years ago.... We'll see how much has to be done to put it back together.

Also, I'm not restoring it. It's ugly and has been poorly repainted already, but I work my tractors. I'll do everything needed mechanically, but won't do much in regard to making it "pretty".

I priced 14.9-38 tires and won't be buying them. $780 per for BKT tubeless radials. Firestone Bias were about $30 cheaper, but required a $70 tube. I didn't price 15.5-38s, but figure they're cheaper. Of course, I'm gonna see what I hafta do to get it running before I drop $1000 to $1500 for tires.

Like some one on here stated a while back "If if casts a shadow you can restore it" (This always tickles me:) and yes the 60's had power Steering as an option.

about 20 years ago I bought a really nice 60 with power steering and a front mount 4 row
cultivator for my dad . It was one the most comfortable tractors to cultivate with, you
should like it.

(quoted from post at 11:46:19 01/31/16) Cheaper to buy a nice one already done.

You're right, but anyone can buy a nice one. If I get this one running, I'll have the story to tell.

For example - I have a 1955 60 I bought in 2004 out of a fencrow with a 4 row cultivator on it. It had sat there for 10 years (seller said 5). He had bought it in the early 80's with the cultivator mounted, and had never taken it off. He only used it to cultivate the whole time he owned it. When he went spraying and quit cultivating, he parked it.

I spent a lot of time, but not much money getting it running. It needed the intake/exhaust manifold replaced and a few other small things Biggest expense was tires ($700 for all new ones all the way around mounted) I use it to this day on the farm. It moves feed every week. It hasn't cultivated since about 2006, but it will this year, along with this one.

Much more interesting than - I bought it all fixed up, loaded it on a trailer, hauled it home, and parked it in the shed.

Yes,, but what Kind of Fun would that be ;^)....I like to buy them cheaper in the 'rough', then as I go back together with them I can be sure of what I have,,, I would take this one in a minute...I'm looking for a rough one that is early model with the window wheels,, I have a "very" rough one here now that is LP,,runs good no live shaft/ no power steering,, I am thinking about working it over for a puller, doing away with the LP part..

I agree, the story is priceless. I bought this A for 400 bucks. Been working on it all winter. It will bale a little hay, and some parades too, but mainly it's great to have something to do.

Have 2 with P/S. If 1 had Ind PTO might fix. 1 is factory LP other bootleg LP. Both are stuck, fence row kept from going to scrap. Have some more 2 cyls . Way market has went should have let them go to scrap.

Shaun,

Are you looking to sell them? Where are you located? If you're somewhat close to Southwest WI, I might be interested.

In 2000 I went to look at a 45 Combine that was forsale. After finding the farm the
Combine turned out to be a 40 & it was rougher than I wanted to tackle.. After
visiting with the man, I found he also had a 1954 60 that was wore out bad... I looked
at the tractor & asked for a selling price. He said It's wore bad & doesn't run well.
I said I understood that, what would you be asking if it was forsale? He said 600.00.
I told him if he could have the equitment moved out of the way , I would return on
Saturday to purchase the tractor if that was OK ?? Since we had to return to his
farm because We also purchased a grain Wagon.. He told me it would run, but not
very well. He agree'd .. On the following Satuday we returned with a drop deck truck
& he had the 60 pulled out of the machinery shed to I could walk all the way around
it.. It has a ARPS 3 point hitch Post hole digger 1/2 mounted on it, he said for
another 100.00 I could buy that too, I agree'd .. We jump started the 60 & it fired
right up & it din' not run well because the intake was cracked, once I placed my hand
on the severe Leak it smoothed out. So I remove my had rather fast. The tractor had
one BRAND NEW 13.6 rear tire & the other well worn. After gathering up all the ARPS
Post Hole parts he carried out a John Deere 801 3 point hitch ( Complete) Then carried
out the two piece frt weight set ..

After we got it home I had to remove the head to repair the manifold mounting
surfaces, a new exhaust/intake manifold, did a valve job, also found a well worn
throttle butterfly inside the head , 2 new batteries, new seat & back rest. Changed
all the fluids & Later I added another new rear tire, added a after market P/S.
It ran so well Had Great compression after the head work, It deserved some paint.
We've used it since 2000 & I've never touched the genny Installed a clutch kit, &
on the coldest of days it will be the 1st to start. We have 10 2 cylinders & now 2
of them are 60's. We named this one the Pull'n Fool. I also installed a electric hour
meter befor the paint job it has slitghly over 2000 house since , so it does get
used. We have around 80 head & put up 9000 or so square bales a year 250 round
bales & fill two silos. This old 60 does what ever, when Needed....

(quoted from post at 19:20:58 01/31/16) They are for sale. But I am in West Central Texas.

Shaun,

Shoot me an email about them. I'd be interested in seeing pics. If they're cheap enough, I might be able to afford having them shipped
