I have the left side crankshaft bearing housing removed on my 1953 John Deere 50. The oil seals (ab4462r) were doubled up, is this a common practice? Can I just install 1 new one?

Parts catalog calls for TWO.

IIRC, the sealing lips face away from each other, one keeps engine oil in the engine, the other keeps transmission oil OUT of the engine.

is this the seals behind the clutch pulley if so that is the right side. right or left is determined by setting in the seat looking forward this true for all cars trucks and tractors in the US

The last seals I installed were the same except installed as previously noted. As I recall the original seal was a complete with two double faced lips. I suppose they quit making the combo seal.
