how to get end play out of 39 H cam shaft

Have a 39 H with lots of end play in the cam shaft. what are some causes for it and the means to eliminate it?

The left hand bearing controls the end play. New bearing. The housing is eccentric and rotates on the studs to adjust the gear backlash.

Mike, you're right about the LH bearing controlling end play of the cam - might also be a loose clamping nut on the LH end of camshaft. But I think you're thinking about the 1940 and later models which had a different LH cam bearing arrangement (including the eccentricity of the housing that permitted some gear backlash adjustment). The 1939 models didn't have a separate bearing housing that permitted such adjustment.

Either way it's in the left bearing. I know the early Hs had the three-stud housing. I didn't know they were not adjustable.
