Mike, you're right about the LH bearing controlling end play of the cam - might also be a loose clamping nut on the LH end of camshaft. But I think you're thinking about the 1940 and later models which had a different LH cam bearing arrangement (including the eccentricity of the housing that permitted some gear backlash adjustment). The 1939 models didn't have a separate bearing housing that permitted such adjustment.
