JD 1010 Diesel

Just wondering about a JD 1010 diesel tractor. I know the 2010's were considered a poor tractor, does that hold the same for a 1010? I don't want one to try to work hard by any means, just thought a little JD would be handy to have around to pull a rake, smaller manure spreader, etc so I wouldn't have to run one of the bigger tractors.

I found a little diesel that really looks to be very well taken care of, and supposedly runs good. What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance - Bob

If you want something hard to work on and VERY hard to get parts for by all means go and buy a 1010 or 2010 gas or diesel.
Good original ones might be worth buying ? as this is the latest collecting craze to have the new generation 10 series.

Spend a little more money and get a 1020. It is ten times the tractor with plenty of parts to be had. 1010 diesels were very hard starters in cold weather. If you do buy a 1010 get a gas one. Tom

I know the parts and poor quality, but this is just a toy. If the diesel seems to sound and run good, I can't believe I would put over 10 or 15 hours a year on it. Just kind of always liked the little 1010's and wanted one as much as a collector as a user. I have real tractors to do the work.

My FIL bought a new 2010 gas back in the 60's and farmed with it and used it with a loader on a very large hog farm he had. I inherited it in the mid 90's and other than synchro's, it never had a single issue. And I'm talking a large hog farm with many different employees. I realize that it was obviously one of the better ones, or just lucky, cause it never got any lovin, for sure until I got it. I traded it off in the early 2000's, but it was still running good for what I used it for.

Bottom line is, I realize it's a gamble, just trying to know what to look for when I look at it. Thanks a lot for the replies - Bob

(quoted from post at 16:42:13 01/29/16) The tractor is still running after 50 some years, It can't be to bad of a tractor.

JD 1010/2010 tractors with diesel engines didn't get classified as JD's worst effort at building a tractor for no reason!!!!!!! Buy one at your own risk. You have been warned!!!!!!!!!!

I've got a couple 1010 RS diesel tractors. It's a collector thing for me. Depending on the age they used different glow plugs, filters, ect. What model is the tractor?

A gasser 1010 after serial # 31,001 iirc can be made to function with fair reliability.
The diesel in the 1010 and 2010 plus the 2010 chassis should be avoided. Unless the tractors are just going to be painted and parked in a collection.

Reading these posts, my idea would be go to the JD dealer, with a list of 6 or 12 parts.... see what's available any more, what's the prices? Would give you an idea.
