720 lp standard starting issues

Hey guys just recently acquired a 720 lp standard. Have been trying to get it to start I know for a fact it ran when parked, but that was over ten years ago. We have been trying to use a small bbq bottle to try and get it started but no luck so far. Its free and has compression and we took the bowl off the air cleaner because it was full of wasp nests. Replaced the points and condenser and have good spark. The bendex on the starter is wore so every time it comes up on compression the starter kicks out so we have been trying to pull start it. It doesnt even try and fire, pulled it half mile one day and nothing not even a hit.

My questions.......

1. Does the small lp bottle not have enoigh pressure? I wouldnt think this would be the case I have seen other guys do this to get by when they need to.

2. Since its been sitting for so long do I need to just break down and rebuild the converter before I try and get it running? Also maybe look at the carb? It was sitting under cover since its been parked.

3. Does taking the bowl off the air cleaner reduced the amount air the carb can pull in?

4. I dont really smell any lp comimg out of stack after trying to pull start it so that leads me back to converter rebuild I would guess? We have to lp bottle piped right to the converter bypassing the strainer because I am sure it needs cleaned out.

Any help would be helpful this being my first lp tractor. Just want to see if I can get it running to establish whatall I need to work on, you know oil leaks and gear noise and things like that. Thanks for your help.

If you'r talking about a 20 lbs propane bottle for your cooker, sometimes they over fill them a couple per cent% you have to open them very slowly so the valves dont snap shut, I have had that happen to me twice.

There must be oil in the air cleaner bowl, and all of the piping connected between
the air cleaner and the carburetor.
The vaporizer must get a vacuum signal from the carburetor to start the flow of LP.
The "snorkel" air inlet to the air cleaner must be clear of debris, wasp nests, and such.
The propane bottle is OK, use it in the upright position.

The 20# BBQ tank should work, but you may be having a problem with the hose between the tank and the tractor. The new style coupling to the tank is color coded; different colors are for different flow rates. Further, there is a little check valve in it that will shut if the flow rate is too high. I have a 630 LP, and when trying to use the 20# tank, it would only fire one time. Finally discovered the check valve was closing due to the high flow rate demand that starts when the engine first fires. Took a small drill bit and drilled out the check valve, so the 20# tank will now work to start the tractor - but just barely. It still doesn't deliver enough fuel to do much more than idle it, but that's enough to let me drive to the big LP tank and add fuel.

Pour about a 1/4 cup gasoline into the intake stack and see if it fires off. I did this on a 730LP that would not start and it fire right up but ran as long as I pour some small amount of gasoline into the stack. This help find the problem which was a small hole in the diaphragm in the regulator causing it to loose vacuum. Got a kit from local LP dealer repaired it and still working fine for the last 12+ years. Good luck.

Thanks guys after I heal up from knee surgery I will get out there and give your ideas a shot. Any body else has anything I am always looking for ideas. Thanks.

A fat powerful blue spark is required. An electrical and ignition system that will start a gasser won't even make a snort on a LP.
