4320 rear main leak

We have a 4320 that seems to be leaking at the rear main again. We just installed a new clutch and pressure plate two years ago along with a rear main and pan gasket. The flywheel bolts are dry and had loctite on them. It appears the oil is seeping between the gasket holder and the seal itself. The crakshaft to seal appears to be dry. What is the best way to get this to stop? I dont think just a new seal will cure the problem as this one looks good it just leaks. Thanks for any suggestions.

The area below the seal quill can be a problem area, sealant is needed there.. one way of proving the leak is to get the fly wheel off, put the flywheel bolts back in, plug the valve cover breather tube and using a clean shop vac plug the hose into the oil fill hole and set the hose to exhaust,,then with a squeeze bottle of Dawn soap and water squirt the area and look for bubbles,, I do this each time I change a seal out.. also make sure the PTO pistons are not the leak,,remove the lower inspection cover and run it with the PTO on,,and of course make sure you don't poke up in there while it's running...

Thanks for the reply. I suspect you are exactly right. I'm going to try the shop vac trick and confirm. What kind of sealant is preferred and do I just run a bead all the way around it with it still bolted to the block?

If it's leaking around the quill you will need to remove the quill clean it up good and then sealant use black silicon, if the pan gasket stays in place leave it alone and work some sealant under it, when you go back on with the quill have your seal ready to install and leave the quill slightly loose as you install the seal this keeps the quill centered then tighten the quill, it all needs to happen fairly quick to stay ahead of the sealant. Re test after your done, and remember you can't reuse the seal,,Darn it try to borrow a seal installing tool..

Made it back out to the shop. Good news and bad news..... The shop vac identified the problem. It is not the rear main it is the pan gasket below the main. Bubble bubble everywhere..... Looks like there should have been another bolt between the two long ones under the main. Now to loosen it up and clean it and hope it seals....thanks for your help it is much appreciated!

That would have been my guess,, blow it clean and use some 3M weather strip adhesive,, turn the shop vac around and try to get some sealant to draw back in,, as you see some work in stop the vac and walk away from it till tomorrow then reverse the vac and re-test,, this should work,, that is a leak pron area and as we go together with them this area needs a bit more attention with some sealant..

That shop vac trick is one ingenious idea! I consider myself at least half intelligent and had never thought of that one. Good job
