SCV Barrel Orings

So in this nifty oring kit JD makes it says to use the orings and backup rings for tractors pre 1970 and the rubber seal/ring/thingy post 70. Wondering if one is better than the other or if the casting is machined different as they both fit the same. Also what are the extra square orings for?
Thanks Mitch

I don't use any of them,,, I use a quad ring with a solid back up ring in stead of the spiral ring,,the tail end of the spiral ring have a good chance of getting under the O-ring giving a way for oil to slip by. You can get them at your Hydro store,,if not, use the o-rings not the cup seal, and be sure to dress up your sleeve before you slide it back in the ends get banged up and a sharp edge will plow a furrow through the new o-rings.

hello, just another opinion,,,i never use the square seal, i always use the supplied orings with good results,,however on newer housings,, 4230 and 4240 etc.. snip the backup in half so you have two complete circles out of one backup ring.. the reason for this is,,,if you use the complete backup ring the spool will fit so tight it is difficult to slide in & out. on the older breakaway couplers, like the old style 3020--4020 etc. you can use the complete backup. this is the way i've been doing this for 40+ years.
