I am looking to have a starter off a 520 repaired.
Are there many places that rebuild starts? and I don't mean just installing new brushes and calling it rebuilt. Is this skill dying with the guys that rebuilt these in the day?
What are your thought and experience with having them rebuilt?

Someone should clean it up, replace bushings and brushes and turn commutator, doubt more needs done.

Where are you located?

There an guy in Peru, il known for rebuilding starters, alternators, generators, and magnitos. Around here the guy is very well known and most don't buy new, they let him rebuild.

Murphysboro, Illinois has a popular starter repair shop. Don't know where you're located.

A shop in Kansas City has done them for years. They rebuilt mine 2 years ago for $95. Works great. It's B and C Electric in KC.

I've rebuilt hundreds of starters. Mostly Delco. I do its as a hobby. I even have a growler and armature lathe that also under cuts commutators.

I'm a little confused on your issues. I've worked on many of these starters. I've found the Bendix generally needs replacing as this is a hard wearing item, but I can't relate to your term rebuilding. The field coils are soldered to a contact knob, now having said that if the knob is worn down to where the contact is really bad then this should be replaced. I never bothered with the main fields unless they were damaged as there is no point. I've replaced a few bushings but these are generally not worn severely. The main issue is smoothing out the armature which can be done with lathe or file, new brushes and new contactor. Most of the time it is bench work with cleanup and minimum amount of parts. There's no reason to tear out components that are seriously worn or bad. Most of these starters are poorly respected with engaging and low battery supply jerking and hammering the Bendix. A lot of the time the ring gear needs to be cleaned up or replaced. Sometimes a good can of electrical cleaner can bring one around with out removing. Be cautious about the removal and not damage anything. Best from Kentucky
