Unstyled A bush hogging

Thinking about buying a pull type cutter for my A. I've read that I need a overrunning or override clutch for my PTO. I'm not even sure they make them to fit a 1935 or if my shaft has the hole drilled through it that it requires. Is there anything else I might need to know? Any tips?

The powershaft on an unstyled A is awfully prone to twisting/breakage if you still have the small shaft. If you still have low compression pistons and the cutters slip clutch is left loose you might be ok..

If your "A" is as original, it almost has as much power as a Late Styled "B", but the disadvantage of a fast 1st gear and rather LOW RPM...

I can use a 6' Bush Hog on my LS"B" and get along well, but I have a good amount of room for the tractor to labor down before I have to shift...

A friend tried his Early "G" on a Bush Hog (6') and he could not get a lot done..the engine would pull down (and it only had to pull down a "Little") and started to whip the PTO from the power impulses...
So, he had to stop a lot and re-start where he could get the RPM up to full speed..
A few more RPM would probably help you get through a few more tough spots...
I'd try it and have a little fun running it..!!
Sharp blades do make a big difference...

FWIW I brushog natural pasture about 12" tall here in Arizona with my 1952 Model B and a 5' brush cutter. The tractor will run all day in 3rd gear and rarely acts like it's bogging down.
Having lived in Texas for 10 years......natural pasture here isn't the same as the stuff in Texas, so I might be comparing apples to oranges.
An over-riding clutch is a must for this type of activity.

I've knocked down mature hay with a Woods 60 on my late A. It's a strong runner and 3rd, sometimes 2nd, is the best I can do. Problem is when it lugs down, the power surges cause the mower to hop. I do better with the Ford 2000.

I went ahead and bought it, a 5 foot pull type and it looks heavy duty. The guy came down to $200 so if it doesn't work out I can always get my money back. This is more for entertainment than necessity, I doubt I'll ever be cutting mature hay with it. Thanks again guys
