I'm diving into the differential of my 80. It has issues of it's own, including that the diff gear spins on the shaft, originally a press fit. I'm thinking of seeing if I can get it keyed to the shaft. I don't really trust any Loctite products for the amount of torque this sees. I thought of welding, but it's a steel shaft and cast gear. Anyone tried anything else?
While looking at the diff, I saw the final drive gears have quite a bit of bad wear, actually pitting, since the 80 had horrible gear howl, I suspect that's the issue!
Am I correct that I can take the two final drive gears and switch sides, so that the wear is on the opposite side of the teeth and have clean (hopefully quiet) teeth in the forward direction. Or can they just be flipped around on the same side?
Some description and lots of pictures of this entire process, which goes back quite a few years, over on Johnnypopper
