Major transmission work in an 80

I'm diving into the differential of my 80. It has issues of it's own, including that the diff gear spins on the shaft, originally a press fit. I'm thinking of seeing if I can get it keyed to the shaft. I don't really trust any Loctite products for the amount of torque this sees. I thought of welding, but it's a steel shaft and cast gear. Anyone tried anything else?

While looking at the diff, I saw the final drive gears have quite a bit of bad wear, actually pitting, since the 80 had horrible gear howl, I suspect that's the issue!

Am I correct that I can take the two final drive gears and switch sides, so that the wear is on the opposite side of the teeth and have clean (hopefully quiet) teeth in the forward direction. Or can they just be flipped around on the same side?

Some description and lots of pictures of this entire process, which goes back quite a few years, over on Johnnypopper

I flip them from side to side if they are worn like that. Don't be surprised if the axle bearings are shot too. You may want to find another diff. ?

Don't forget the pinions that drive the bull gears. May have to replace them since they have fewer teeth than the bull gears and more wear.

My only advice would be whatever gears you use be sure that you use a matched set and be sure to get your back lash set to specs. Those straight steel cut gears were noisy enough when new but only got worse with wear. If you were to put in a new one mated to a worn gear they will sound like they are going to come unglued at any moment especially transmission gears. Also while you have everything apart inspect the oil pick-up tube and be sure there are no places that can leak air.

Thanks for the tip, they look decent, I was going to swap sides so there was a fresher side in contact

The oil tubes look good. I don't think I can find a matched set, or really afford one, but I'll do the best I can. The tractor has howled the entire time I owned it, I just wanted to make sure nothing was going to fly apart and HOPE to quiet it some. I've got or are going to get in new bearings. Debating to see how bad those axle bearings are!

Thanks,

My concern about finding another diff is that it'll be expensive, with really high shipping on top of that. I do think I'll make some calls to see what people ask for them
