1020 exhaust manifold/gasket question

1967 1020 gas. I got a used down draft manifold because the one on the tractor that has a crack and chunk missing. I was told it cannot be fixed by a good local welder. The new manifold has some pitting around the exhaust ports. How much is too much? Which way does the gasket go? Bumpy side toward engine or manifold? Can I just torque to repair manual specs or do I need a gasket sealer with the rough spots on the manifold? Thanks!

I would have it surfaced at a machine shop It mite work like it is. I don't think the gasket matters which side is up or down

In MHO, from the looks of the center exhaust hole, I'd have the surfaces machined down, looks like it was all ready leaking around that one. As far as the gasket I doubt that it makes much difference if it is not stated on it which surface goes to the block.

The far separate gasket has one side that has a kip
on it. I'm sure there is a right and wrong way to
install. Service manual I have doesn't say and
neither did the package.

Not trying to sound mean but that manifold is in very poor shape. I would either have it machined flat or send it back and find another one. I alway's installed the gasket like your pic shows but I have no idea if it's proper. Seems like most gasket makers dimple both sides but I've got them smoothe on both sides also. I consider the lip a fire ring so it go's towards the fire. JMO

I didn't pay much for the manifold. I looked at all my options including going to the upright exhaust which would run about $350-$400 for a manifold and muffler. Then there is putting the hole in the hood correctly.... Yikes! Been looking at doing this for about 6 months so I've put some thought into it.

So that all being said I have some money built into my thinking to get it machined. I couldn't tell when I bought it however that it was that pitted.

Did find on the gasket where the dimpled side says OUT. So in the picture I do have it facing the wrong direction. Smooth side would be toward the block if I interpret that correctly.

I'd try and get the gasket surface machined. Now while it is off is the time. An automotive shop with the BIG belt sander to do cyl. heads works great for those odd shapes parts.

It's been a long time since I worked on a gas but I'm thinking the
"flange" should face away from the pressure (head).
Will it fit either way?

Yes it should face away. Found where it was very small print stamped on the inside of the flange that says out. It does fit snug into the exhaust manifold.
