Stopping JDA Engine

Is there a "correct" way to quickly stop an early styled A when running? Currently I just shut off the fuel supply and let the bowl run dry, but that takes a good minute or so. I'm thinking of an emergency situation, or perhaps while I'm testing a repair and something goes wrong. Is shorting the ignition a bad idea? Magneto is an XH1042. Or stalling it in gear if I happen to be on board?

Kill it the fastest in an emergency, ignition is best for that, running it dry best otherwise.

You can also choke it off, but it'll be flooded if you want to restart right away. It's actually a nice way to shut down for the next day though, because you can just give her a flip, and she'll take off. Sorta bad for your oil though. I think it's amusing that the manual says to shut the A off by draining the carburetor onto the ground. Shows how different things were before the EPA told us what we could and couldn't do.

On mine I just reached in and held the throttle lever on top of carb tight against the little spring and it would stop. That spring will bend enough so throttle plate covers up the idle port.

Just close the throttle, put the tractor in a High Gear, HOLD the Brakes and KILL the engine..

If it has a Distributor, you will want to shut the Ignition off, but it won't hurt the Tractor one bit to Kill it this way..

Our Late Styled JD "B" tractors never knew any other way...

I would not shut the gas off and "run it dry", unless I was to leave the tractor in Storage for 3 Months of more ( IF I would even do it then..

Yes, but the Manual is probably leaning more toward engines operating with "Tractor Fuel" (Kerosene?)..

If you had to stop the engine while it was filled with Tractor Fuel (etc), you may not get it re-started without draining the Carb and re-filling it with Gasoline..

If my Zippo ran dry in the field, a quick stop and re-fill it from the Carb Drain got it working Fine again (often)..!!

Our understanding of the Mind-Set back then is usually imperfect...

I can't just turn the throttle down, it won't stop itself, but I'll try holding the throttle lever as suggested.

The top gear stall would work if I happen to be sitting on the seat, but what about when you're standing beside it and forgot to slip the fan belt all the way on and it's flopping around, which is what started me thinking about a faster way to kill it while standing beside the thing! Or heaven forbid some kid comes up from the other side and starts looking at the clutch pulley.

Mike has the right idea. You can purchase the red button kit to go on the mag for around $9.00. If you have a malfunction with the governor, linkage or carb. you can kill the tractor easily. Killing the spark is the required kill process for most gas tractor pullers.
