JD 4240 alternator

Having problems with Delco alternator. Put in new parts etc. What is the purpose of the capacitor? It is causing the alt to short out. JD parts does not show it in the parts book. Is there a number for it some place else.

The capacitor is for radio interference, not needed.

Agreed, not needed, leave it off entirely. Some radios make a whining noise when supplied from an alternator charging system and the capacitor is supposed to help with this, but I have doubts it actually works in the first place. So it winds up being just another item that goes bad in my book.

If you want to keep the noise suppression capacitor, it IS shown in the 4240 parts catalog at jdparts.com.

#AR55835, at about $11 US.
