1950 B LEAKING HEAD GASKET?

I just had the cylinder head surfaced and magnufluxed at a local machine shop. It's a newer
replacement head according to the part number, B2871R, as it does not have replaceable push rod
tubes. I installed a new head gasket and new lead washers, torqued to 105 ft lbs. Ran for a while
to get warm, re-torqued the head to 105 ft lbs. Ran again to get temp up to operating range. My
problem is, there is coolant leaking out the back side of the head down at the bottom. It's a very
slow leak, but none the less, IT LEAKS! Any suggestions? Could the head gasket have been put on
backwards? I installed it with the "crimped rings" around the cylinders facing toward the head.

Well every so often I had one of those seep at the top and run down. The gaskets made for them are not like the old style ones were. They used to have roll crimps around all the water passages too. The centers used to be asbestos too. A good dose of bar's leak ( not the pellet kind )and go work it hard sealed mine up.

Mike, this gasket did have crimps around the other passages. The I&T manual said to install it with the flat edge against the block. However, the crimps for the "other passages" were on the opposite side as the cylinder crimps. SO.... still not sure if maybe I put it on backwards. I'm letting it sit a few days, then run it again and see what happens. Thanks

That's how the old ones I remember were. Crimp around cylinders one way and the others had it another way. But on some of the water jacket ports they didn't match up real good and some don't get squished right either. The smooth side around the cylinders ( fire ring ) goes to the block. But I have pulled them apart with it the other way it didn't seem to matter.

Never done a b but my wd and wd45 allis Chalmers both leaked like a sieve till I hooked them to a plow and pulled them good and hard for a couple hours.

I agree with jr1983 on not getting to worked up about it till you go out and work the snot out of it for a few hours, then try retorquing and see what happens. Just warmed up never seems to do much for me.

What side did you put the compresion ring on the head gasket toward, the head or the block.Smooth side goes toward block.Just bought a tractor that had been rebuilt leak badley, when I took head off they had put head gasket upside down????????
