1953 John Deere 50 thermostat

I am restoring a 1953 John Deere 50 serial#5007908, it originally had the thermostat controlled shutters, mine were removed before I bought it. Here is my question, is it possible to install a thermostat system like on serial#5016616-5029919 (items in boxed area) without changing top of radiator, I have already removed thermostat from bottom of radiator and installed a cover plate that I made. I would be removing the original water outlet b3409r (8) and replace it with b3293r (1) water outlet and b3294r (5) thermostat cover with a thermostat. I have a couple concerns, the upper pipe will either need to be longer or shorter, will the upper water pipe set at the same angle to connect both ends as it did before and since the original radiator top will not be changed (large opening) will it affect cooling system operation, the reason I say this is because the newer set up had a smaller opening in radiator top.

I'm certainly no expert, but I have a shuttered 50 and I'm interested in this subject. It looks to me like you'd also have to devise a bypass (part #19 in your parts drawing) for use until the thermostat opens. Someone smarter than me will come along and tell us, I hope.

My dad has a 1955 JD 50 serial#5027xxx and after looking at it is what got me thinking about this, his does not have a water bypass

This is picture of original set up, #36 from this pic would be replaced with #1 and #5 from original post, #39 from this pic would remain the same

I had an early model 50 that I used for years for odd jobs around the place. even had a # 45 loader on it. It had the early shutter system and shutters were removed. I never really had any problems running it without the shutters. Ran it on some pretty cold days too. Manifold was unable to be set for hot or cold too. So I guess depending on what you do with it and how often I would not mess with adding a thermostat. I'd put the extra time and energy into tuning it up and fine tuning the adjustments.

A 3/32 hole drilled in the stat body will suffice as a bypass. Install a 195F and enjoy a machine that burns less fuel, has less cylinder bore wear, less crankcase dilution , less smelly exhaust, less stalling and cleaner spark plugs.
