I am restoring a 1953 John Deere 50 serial#5007908, it originally had the thermostat controlled shutters, mine were removed before I bought it. Here is my question, is it possible to install a thermostat system like on serial#5016616-5029919 (items in boxed area) without changing top of radiator, I have already removed thermostat from bottom of radiator and installed a cover plate that I made. I would be removing the original water outlet b3409r (8) and replace it with b3293r (1) water outlet and b3294r (5) thermostat cover with a thermostat. I have a couple concerns, the upper pipe will either need to be longer or shorter, will the upper water pipe set at the same angle to connect both ends as it did before and since the original radiator top will not be changed (large opening) will it affect cooling system operation, the reason I say this is because the newer set up had a smaller opening in radiator top.
