which model would you pick

If you were going to grain farm 200-300 acres what model would you take if you did your own work and were full tillage. 5020 or 4020 or 730 or 830 or 630? Just for fun and opinions.

I don't know the first thing about the 5020 bit I think a 4020 would be the perfect all around tractor for 200-300 acres if I had to farm it with one
tractor.

Depending on condition year and size of implements a nice side counsel open station 4020.They are also the highest price .The 2 cyl are most efficient and 5020 would be a cheap workhorse.Personally I would find a nice 4430/4440 and be comfortable and they aren't that much more.

For me it would have to be the 4020 first (never ran one) and the 730 2nd (I have ran one of these as a kid). Either of these is big enough to do the tillage while still nimble enough to do the light work tasks.

630 would be 3rd choice. It would do both just be limited to small tillage equipment so lots of seat time.

5020 and 830 would excellent at tillage but I can not imagine using either on light nimble tasks at all.

Well i would have to say the 4020 seems to eb the pick. So if you could add one model to that list what would it be?

If it's rowcrop grains, I'd guess it means part time farming with a full time job somewhere off-farm. Time available to farm would be limited to evenings after work and Saturday, if you take Sundays off . Budget ten to fifteen hours maximum per week, weather permitting.

I think I would want a tillage tractor of 125+ horsepower with a comfortable cab pulling 18 foot wide equipment to get the fieldwork done in a timely manner, and a smaller 30 to 70 HP tractor for utility work. Maybe a 4430 or 4630 and a 2020, 2510, 3020 or similar sized tractors.

In the last five to ten years high grain prices and high land rents hit many smaller dairy and livestock farms pretty hard in central Minnesota. Many penciled out the numbers and found better income from less work and less risk by quitting the livestock and either farming more land or rented out the ground to a larger operation. Rents are still high compared to grain prices, renting it out may still be a good option.

If I had the choice of only one tractor to do all of the farming it would be the 4020. It can plow, cultivate, plant, spray, mow, rake hay, the works. In the spring it can work 100 acres per day with a 20 foot field cultivator and turn around and plant that 100 acres the next day with an 8 row planter. I know, it is capable of more but I am being realistic. In a fairy tale world it could field cultivate and plant 300 acres in six days. One year out of ten it might just work out that way.

Do you do all those jobs on a grain farm? Just reading the replies it seems like a few missed that part. The 4020 no doubt is the better all around tractor but the 830 will be cheaper to run on a "grain" farm.

I should have verified things. My post was related to a corn/soybean farm in northwest Iowa. A true no till farmer would only spray and plant. Then there is minimum till, conventional till, strip till, ridge till. With conventional till the 4020 would rip or moldboard plow 150 acres stalks in the fall. In the spring it would level the 150 acres of plowing using probably two passes before planting and work the 150 acres of bean stubble once before planting. The 4020 would pull a sprayer over all of the crop ground applying a preplant herbicide and it would pull the sprayer through the crops again with a post herbicide. Looks like a job for a mostly full time farmer to me. I used to do this same work with a 1070 Case on 480 crop acres. A 1070 and 4020 are similar sized.

To answer your question, on add one more to that list; a 4430 with powershift or good working quad. / reasons / Dualed up, it can handle a 12' chisel or 12' [heavy] plowing disc for primary tillage; for secondary tillage a 16' to 18' disk, or a 18' field cult. with mulcher or harrow, even in central ND. soil .... 20' drills for small grain , 6 or 8 row 30" planter & cultivator [front (FM or 725 series) or rear mount.. for your soybeans; for little or no chemical use, a 3th. crop in rotation would help.. 30 series have a great cab, for those ND. beating winds.. & good road speed , & comfort to tote 2 or 3 grain wagons to elev. ... cost about same, maybe less than, late 4020 powershift.. I would be with anything less, and farm with a full time job. .... Hope this make cents to you...
