JD MODEL A. Under the gear cover on the left side just rear of the crankshaft. You can see from the photos the locking nut is not threaded onto that shaft. At this point I don't know why it is loose but want to retread it back on and lock it down with the tab. Is this a critical preload or can I get by with a "feels right" when I spin it down. This is not a working tractor. Thanks guys.

if you can get it to start back on the shaft just tighten it down and lock it .the shaft end play is auj on the other side by shims it looks like somebody has been shifting on go,.., teeth are petty bet up

Thanks, I will give that a whirl. Boy was that some nasty crud I draiNed out of the transmission!. Can I get by with flushing it with diesel or should I pull that tranny cover and spray it down? I expect them forks are just like any transmission fork. Get it in neutral and keep it there while removing and re installing?

I would just flush it be sure to drain the rear end there is a big plug just above the drawbar and to one side takes 3/4 ' braker bar

That's what I will do kent. Do you know if the bearing cover with the 3 bolts just rear of this cover on the left side can be removed without some shaft falling out of place etc. I have a slight leak there I would like to fix.

Ouch, look what I found. Can this bearing be changed from the outside by chance? Pics explain enough. Darn!

Kent. I figured it out. I read through my service manuAL. LoOKs like the differential is coming out for some bearings.. It really don't look like a real terrible job. If you guys don't mind. From time to time I would like to post some pictures/questions of the process as I go along.

Looks really bad you need to tare down the trans to i will bet there are bad brgs in the trans to. where are you i have a lot of A parts on hand I am in eastern SD

I am in southeastern Mt. I will work on building a stand this week. Hope to have it split and looked over before christmas. I may check in with you on those parts depending on what I find. Thanks Kent

I got my "1944" Model A split, after finding a differential bearing bad/missing. Pics show my tractor split and there are a few chipped gears. The 2nd-4th slider is the worst, I think I can live with the rest. It was also the one that made noise/felt bad when operating. I will clean it up and then decide from there what I need to gather up. Suggestions are appreciated. Thanks guys.
