Need some opinions from the new gen gurus on here. Two tractors, a '66 4020 , syncro, like new tires, all there in excellent original shape with 6000 hrs and one owner vs '72 4620 w/fact cab, syncro, 80% rubber, 5000 actual hrs and in very nice original condition. Both have original 3 pts and dual outlets and run and operate great. Opinions on value and reasons for value difference and all around utility use on 100 head dairy/cash crop farm. Thanks in advance.

I guess a question I forgot was did reliability suffer when upping a 404 from 95 to 135 hp? The 4620 looks to be built heavier to handle it but was hoping someone might know first hand.

Both are good tractors. A 4620 has more Heart than a 4020. One thing to think about. A 4020 has both 540 and 1,000 rpm pto. A 4620 only had 1,000 rpm.

Wait 'til you find out what a clutch job costs on a 4620.

Makes getting into a 4430 or 4630 seem downright CHEAP!

Two different tractors. The 4620 is 150H.P. has heavy duty front, better hydraulics ,no 540PTO,has turbo, and built heavier everywhere. The 4020 is handier has a light front end if thinking loader, both PTOs and my guess there wouldn't be a lot of difference in value.Depending what you are going to do w with the tractor one is a great chore tractor and the other would be much better in the field and if 4020 has cab it wouldn't be as good as that year would be aftermarket both too noisy.A nice 4440 at around $20K would be much better. To find two tractors with that low of hours is a good find.

We have several 4020's and a 4520 with the 4620 engine that is running 170hp. All are good tractors depending on what you want to do.The 4020's do not do 4520 jobs and the 4520 rarely does 4020 jobs. The 4520 only has 1000 pto but that has never been a problem as the forage harvester is 1000 as well. Like posted below the 4520 is expensive to put a clutch in if you use all new Deere parts. We redid ours and had the plates turned on a lathe and put an aftermarket clutch disc in so it could have been worse. If you want and like the 20 series tractors either would be a good choice but if you are going to spend lots of hours on it maybe consider moving up to a 30 series 4230,4430 or 4630 which would give you a much better cab.I bought a 4230 just because we needed a nice cab with air but other than that I put more hours on the 4020's and 3020's. I would say it all depends on what the applications are going to be and how large or small the implements will be. Are you looking for a utility style tractor or a tillage tractor or one tractor to do everything or what? As stated, the 4620 is 1000 pto only and that is a dealbreaker for a lot of guys. If your implements are small or you need something that's a tad bit easier to get on and off of, the 4020 will likely be better. The 4020 is also going to be much better on fuel. The 4620 is a big physical tractor with lots of weight. It's great for pulling or handling heavy implements. It is still fairly nimble to run, so it can do some of those smaller things, but that doesn't make it the best utility tractor.

Another consideration is cost. For what they are, I think 4020s are overvalued a bit and 4620s are undervalued some. From what I see, you can get into a nice 4620 for about the same or less money than a 4020 and you would have a lot more tractor. I will say that it seems that the 4620 is often overlooked because for a tad more you can go right into a 4630 and have about the same tractor with quad range and sound-gard cab. Perhaps that is the reason prices of 4620s have stayed low. Someday they will be as rare as hens teeth and make a good collectible like 6030s are becoming.

I have several 4020s and 4620s and a 4520. For me, I doubt I would ever choose to run the 4020 over the 45 or 46 unless the implement specifically called for the 4020. I really like the 45s and 46s that well. The turbo sound is so much better and weight and power is there if you need it. You can really get yourself into trouble in a hurry on a 4020 trying to do more than it's capable of.

But also keep in mind that there were almost 185,000 4020s made vs only 7,000 or so 4620s. So parts for 4020s are everywhere and many of those parts are also interchangeable with other 20 series tractors, ie 4000s and 3020s, etc. There are even a lot of good aftermarket parts for 4020s available, whereas parts for 4620s are a lot harder to come by and very few aftermarket parts available. That alone might be your deciding factor but you should take all these into consideration and make a good sound decision for you.

Not sure but I'm thinking nothing rare about a 66 4020 except maybe this one is in really nice shape ? so it should not sell for a crazy number. Those are the side consoles ! Now I'm also thinking that 4620 might ? be wanted by the new gen collectors market that has opened up here lately. Very seldom seen one here in Ohio.
If you can buy them right get both ! otherwise pass them up for something newer which is much better suited to use on modern equipment everyday.

Thanks very much for all the posts/info. Just what I wanted. The 4020 is $ 7000 and a good $800 to get it here. The 4620 is $ 7200 and probably $ 300 to haul. Really leaning toward the 4620 as just seems to be a lot heavier built machine. By "utility" I did mean "do a little of everything" but it would take over as the high hp tractor here so in that respect would get my nod. "One owner" as the 4020 is nice but not knowing that owner and his habits, could just mean nothing. Thanks everyone for the info.
