I have a 1977 4230 quad range that occasionally pops out of 3rd and 4th gear no mater what range it is in. The interesting part is that it mainly happens when the tractor is going downhill. I have searched for this problem and I see Tim S. has talked about a spring on 4430's to hold the lever in place. I have the parts catalog for it but not sure what spring this could possibly be. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated....Thanks

The spring I talked about is on the bottom shaft lever, your issue is on the top shaft. Your problem could be that the cab mounts are bad, letting the cab settle down ,changing the position of where the shifter needs to be. Wear on the top shaft Sychronizers are normally more pronounced in the 1-2 gears, that is what gets shifted into most every time the tractor is moved. Place it in each gear and see how the shifter mates up with the stall on the shift plate, if it is not mating up nicely with the plate adjust the shift rod to where is will,,and look at the cab mounts, if they are all squished out you know they are bad..

Your late model 4230 will have all the shift improvements that were offered, which is good...
