John Deere M Engine question

Hi all,

Does anybody know what the proper distance between a cylinder at top dead center and the top of the cylinder block is?

When we disassembled our 1949 John Deere M we discovered a deck plate between the engine block and cylinder head. The distance we measure without this deck plate is 0.30 mm (0.012 inch) as you can see in the picture. But we prefer not to use the deck plate, so is 0.30 mm enough?

Thanks!

Been awhile since I had one apart but I sure thought the pistons came flush with the top ? The head gaskets are pretty thick on them ?

Can't give you a measurement but the reason the plate is there is because someone had to cut the block or head way too much at some point. Could be both were planed down too much.

That could be the case. The engine block with the deck plate was cracked, so we now have another block. With this ´new´ block we come to this measurement. But it seems like we do not need to use the deck plate anymore.
