John Deere #5 Sickle Mower knife replacement question

Hello all!
Thanks to a Johnson Sickle Servicer Tool my cousin had, we made short work of all but the 5 knives closest to the "Knife head." See picture below.

I don't think it will take TOO long to shear off the remaining rivets and replace the knives, but the rivets closest to the "Knife Head" are a little longer. According to my manual, the majority of the rivets are PN Z 5086 H. The longer ones are Z 5874 H. Google was not much help finding any info on them (length). Was wondering if anybody knew the specs on these longer ones? The local Deere dealer is closed tomorrow and was hoping to utilize a couple other resources to by a dozen of the rivets.

Thanks!
Russ

On my #5, I have ground off the rivet top, punched out the rivet and got one about 1/8" or so longer and riveted a new section on with a ball pien hammer. Actually I use a hammer on all sections cuz I don't have a riveting tool any more.

Most any farm and home store has boxes of rivets and some of them have a number of then that are short medium and long and will work just fine. But that all said me I have switched every thing I have over to bolt that way you can replace a bad section right out in the filed and go on

Good to know. I'll pick some up tomorrow. Luckily I also have been able to borrow another tool to install the remaining knives.

Hopefully, I'll be able to knock it out in a couple hours!

Thanks again!

Yes, back it the old days when we ran 2 or 3 old #5's to make hay we would lay the bar on the edge of a piece of railroad iron, and hammer on the section to shear the old rivets,, if you didn't watch what you were doing it would put a nasty bow in the bar..I am going to fix up my old #5 and when I do I am going to put SI sections and guards on it, the kind that every other section is upside down,,that is a great cutting system..and I will use bolts instead of rivets,,I know that part will not be original but it will mow nice..

I always put knife on a vise opened enough for blade to go thru and just hit old blade on top searing off rivets works good if replacing new blades...a couple hits and blade is off....

Yes it's near the same effect, but if you let the section you are knocking out get a bit close to the end of the vise it will start to bend the bar a little at a time, this mostly happens when your replacing all or several sections, if the bar ends up with a big curve in it you will not get good results, our Dad would give my Brother and I a bad time when we would let that happen...sickle bars are near a thing of the past around here, we still have a #50 on a 3020 for trim mowing..
