Old John Deere Iron

Saw these on my way past the scrap yard today. I was going to ask about the L, but I think it is too far gone.

Like some one said on here once,, "If it cast a shadow it can be restored" I love dinging around old junk like that....

Maybe I'll go back tomorrow. I'd like to have a little L or LA with a working sickle mower. I've never seen rear frame or seat rust like that. I'm thinking the rear was buried in dirt. There are a couple running L's on CL that might be a bettter option...but that would take all the fun out of it.

They are called treasures!!!

What model of horse drawn mower machine was that? I have the complete family of John Deere horse drawn mowers, staring with the Dain and up to the Big #4.

I am looking for a couple of parts on the lift mechanism for the Dain and have not had any luck over the past 2 years.

That to me looks like a L based on the hollow tube frame. The rust of the frame is of concern but you can find frames around on ebay and through junk yards. I had to buy one for my LA. The rest that needs fixing are easy finds; seat, fenders, steering wheel... Rear rims are not correct but those tires look great. If you are just looking for something to use I would get it bought and replace what is needed and run it. Looks to me like it was maybe in a swamp or buried like you said. I would check the fluids and see if is oil, oil and water, or muck before I shelled out too much money for it.

Don't believe I could leave that little "L" at the scrap yard, especially if it could be rescued for close to scrap value.

In My opinion you would be a fool to leave it there. I wish I could show you
some pictures of the 1944 Model A when it came off the truck into my driveway.
You will have a NEW Definition of Too Far Gone. That L looks Pretty good.. So
does some of the other STUFF!

The L sure would make a good parts tractor if nothing else.
I don't see an LA ?
Wonder if someone left a bag of fertilizer on the seat and it dripped onto the rear frames ? Sure seems strange giving the front is so nice except for the dent in the lower part below the grill. Many are missing this part !

I would say its a parts tractor Its a L and a elc start L too! But the bad is the tag is
missing can it be saved YES but is it worth it ?? Needs alot of money and parts and then
still no tag! What do they want for it? Good for parts!!! Chris

dang, if thats a parts tractor then you guys would laugh all the way to scrap yard with my L & LA cause they look a lot worse, but mine have good serial tags. Theres not much to those little guys, how could you get hurt buying it and if nothing else fixing what needs fixed and piddling around??

I was mostly concerned about the frame being so rusted. Might be plenty of frames laying around ?

I believe it is a John Deere Model E Spreader. All these items are at Astoria Auto Wrecking and Recycling in Astoria Oregon.
