3010 backfires when shut off

3010 gas runs good but about 3-5 seconds after it is shut off it will backfire though the exhaust, pop the rain cap open & shoot a flame out. Carburetor has been gone though. It has no exhaust leaks & don't find any intake leaks. Any help is greatly appreciated.

That is caused by a hot exhaust when you stop it, the unburned fuel ignites in the exhaust. My garden tractors do that if I run them at full throttle, then pull back to idle and stop engine. Just let it idle for a little while before shutting down.

I do not know if the 3010 has a main jet solenoid on the carburetor, but that can cause this or run on if bad.

Thank you for the suggestions. The tractor does not have a solenoid. Even if you let it idle, it will still backfire. The muffler was blown out inside & cracked on the bottom. I thought this might be the problem, so I replaced it. It made no difference. I have done some looking into this problem & it seems like this is fairly common on these tractors.

You'll have to kill it with any other method than the ignition switch then. In high gear with brakes on, choke it to death, run it out of fuel, come to mind. Even on garden tractors that HAVE a fuel shut off solenoid, they don't use it right so there are 'backfires' here too. The ignition should not go dead before the solenoid shuts off the gas, they way they are done they both go at the same time and it doesn't really work out as good as it could.

I know this sounds counterintuitive and takes a bit of timing and practice but absolutely works. First do idle down and cool. That helps. Next, when your ready for shut down, simultaneously quickly open the throttle and before the engine responds, shut off the key. Works every time

Just a thought, is your idle rpm set to spec. A little high and they will roll over enough to set up the back fire.

Sometimes Gremlins are amazing. I have an old Batchtold walk behind with an 8 hp Briggs on it. it is so predictable that i usually just for grins point my finger at it and drop the thumb to the tune of the backfire.

I have had a few engines did that or worse want to run on. The ones I could not get to respond to proper adjustments and tune ups I would have to set the low idle speed way low or even low enough kill the engine when I held the throttle lever at idle.
This reminds me that my F725 JD lawn mower does this every so often and I should check the idle speed it sounds a little fast.
