Counter-shaft assembled on the bench to make sure the parts are all in the correct orientation. On the RH side, 2nd & 5th speed, then pinion differential drive gear, spacer, and 1st & 3rd speed gear. 2nd & 5th and 1st & 3rd both have a longer hub side on each gear. Do both of the hubs face inward? The picture in my manual isn't totally clear. Since this assembly will be pressed together in the transmission case, it would really be nice to verify they are assembled in the proper orientation. This transmission project is to replace bad bearings...which turn out to be quite expensive.

Some times if I loose my placement of those gears you can see marks on the sides of them that will match up to the other gear or spacer helping identify how they were. I try and be real careful to remove them and place them in order ,but even the best plans you can get them mixed up.
Does yours have a snap ring on the shaft that sits in a collar that goes next to the idler gear cluster with the roller bearings in it ? Often times things have banged around so much over the years everything moves to a little different spot when you tighten it up. This can make the idler gear get tight with not enough side play. If this happens I chuck it up in the lathe and take a bit off the side of the spacer or gear whichever needs it to work right again. I try and set that shaft to 0 end play and still rotate freely. The factory .004-.006 sure lets them start hammering into each other.
