4240 fuel issue?

for the last couple of weeks my 4240 does not start well. It will spit and sputter for a half a minute before it takes off and runs normal. I assumed that the fuel was leaking back into the tank, but there is not a check valve like the 44's have. I filled the tank full and no difference. I also replaced the fuel filter and no difference. Do I have an issue with the pump, fuel leaking back to the tank? plugged line?
The Roosa Master pump was rebuilt 2 years ago.

If I squirt a shot of either in her she runs perfect until the either is burned off and then it goes back to spitting and sputtering for a half a minute or so.

Have you changed the supply pump yet??...and possibly a restriction in the fuel line coming from the tank...

I have not replaced the lift pump yet. This morning I removed the supply line from the tank to the lift pump and there was a healthy stream a fuel shooting out of the line a couple of inches, so I feel that there is no blockage there. I then removed the inlet line to the injection pump and manually pumped the lift pump, fuel was coming out decent, maybe it was not enough, but I think it should be more than enough to run the tractor????

The fuel pump has a check valves. If one of those goes bad
causing the fuel to pump back and forth making it foam.
Usually you can see that in the filter. If it runs OK in a
minute it would not be that.
I would say injectors are the problem.

I'll throw this out there... are you new to the tractor? I've had two 4240's and have a 4020 with a natural aspirated 466 in it. All of them have started a little rough in cold weather, especially after
they had some hours on them. While all of them would start, none of them would idle super evenly right away, unlike the turbo'd 466s.

Just an observation... and probably not much help.

Nope...
Have owned a 4020 since 1970 and the 4240 since 1999. This is the first time that I have had this issue where it spits and sputters starting up. Yes, I do agree that they do tend to start hard when the temps drop.

I had the injectors rebuilt when the pump was done 2 years ago.
I'm going to order a new lift pump and try that

I have seen lift pumps work manually but not work when the engine was running. I think you are on the right track by replacing it. Mike

Explain how injectors can miss cold then smooth out
if they aren't just right? Is that your question?

So I replaced the supply pump, there is no doubt a bg differenc in the anount of fuel that is pushed out when you are manually pumping the pump with the lever. However, I still have the same problem as it will spit and sputter for 30 seconds or so.
I once agin confirmed that I have good flow from the tank to the pump and replaced the fuel filter.

I still though that there was a screen in the pump or a check valve? Any thoughts?
Thanks
