4020 No Reverse

This a follow up to the earlier post on a couple of Diesel 4020's that won't go into reverse that were offered to me to buy. Turns out they are Power shifts and they have been sitting for 10 or more years. The time of sitting have not been good for them. They are 1964 year and 1967 year models. I am going to pass on the 1964 model and try to get the 1967 for it's engine and part out the rest of it. I am not thrilled about old power shift transmissions because of cost of parts. Thanks Merton

No reverse gears on a powershift trans could be shift linkage or shift valve problem as 1,2,3,4 forward & 1,2,3,4 reverse utilize the same clutch packs & brake components in trans.

I would at least look into borrowing a pressure guage and installing it on the "B3" port and seeing what the pressure is. This will help dertermine whether the issue is internal or external. I would also check the lubrication pressure (clutch), the port is located benieth the inching peddle. As TX Jim stated, maybe it is just a linkage issue or the shift valve.

OK I will check Transmission pressures and linkage after I get the tractor. I just don't have high hopes for tractors that are not used for years. Most of the time there is a good reason they stopped using it and parked it. When I buy old non running tractors you have to sometimes use the part out option. Merton

I have seen that alot to with the 2 cyl's. Usually was a reason they sat. But on the plus side the rest of the parts had that many less years of wear !

Reverse shift is made by moving the shift lever sideways.
Probably is just a linkage problem. There are two levers
on the front of the shift valve housing that the cables attach to.
Under the RH battery watch for arm movement as you move the lever sideways.
You can do this from the ground with engine off. Much cheaper fix than
if it was a synchro. Buy them both if the price is right.

There's only one cable that pertains to shifting on a 4020 PS trans and that is the park cable. The actual speed shifts are controlled by rods(parts keys 16 & 17). My guess is link(parts key 21) isn't shifting shift valve into reverse correctly.

Correct TJ. I was thinking 30 series I guess.
Same deal though to see if lever is moving.

There are a lot of early 4020's that have never had anything done to the power shift transmissions...and then the most of them only had PTO issues....pretty amazing actually...

The guy that invented it used to work for Ford and designed the select-o-speed tranny. He told Ford it wasn't ready to sell yet but they went ahead and started selling them anyhow. I forget if he quit over this or got fired ? but then ended up at Deere. Was a story about this on TV.

Yes Ford was wanting a small light weight unit to work in their 40HP class tractors and it didn't work out .
