4020 transmision

A friend asked if I could work on his 4020 as it is having transmission issues, namely it does not want to shift into 2nd or 5th very well and grinds. I assume it must be the syncros? Now, I have never been into a 4020 transmission before and would like to know how difficult or involved would it be to repair?

Kirk, I know nothing about 4020 trans, but
I suggest you look below at the post: "4020 stuck in reverse and park"
Good Luck, kelly

To repair/replace syncronizers one needs to split tractor between clutch & trans housings, remove rockshaft cover, trans pump and top shaft of trans.

If it is both second and fifth it is more likely a bottom shaft problem. It will require removing both rear axles and the pinion. You will need to empty the trans. case and then reassemble. There are a few special tools that make rebuilding a bottom shaft much easier.I have a 3020 utility that will need the same thing this winter:( Tom

I would take a hard look at how much wear the shift quadrant and linkage have. Second and fifth are the same hi/lo as in the shift stations. As somebody else said it may be a range problem and the 4 ranges are on the lower shaft. The two gears that are having a problem are the most used gears in the tractor. I would start simple and tighten up and adjust all of the external linkage first. You can upgrade the detentes to the ball and cup style used in the newer tractors. Worn linkages should be tightened up when you do internal repairs anyway.
