We have a 4020 that when you put it in park its stuck in gear also. It will kill tractor if you let the clutch out. Have to put it in like 4 ot 7th gear then back to park. Is the linkage wore out or in the tranny? Its a synro with 7000 hrs on tack that been broke as long I can remember....guess more like 12-15000 hrs. Thanks

Something is worn or out of adjustment pertaining to the transmission top shaft shift collars, forks, cam, linkage, or shifter.

When you put it in park, two shift collars are engaged on the lower haft, locking it.

But on the top shaft, the three collars for lo, hi, and reverse should all be disengaged, so the top shaft can turn freely with the engine.

One of those collars is remaining engaged, effectively connecting the top shaft to the locked lower shaft.

When you cycle the shifter to a higher gear, and then back to park, you are temporarily moving the offending collar to it's "neutral" position.

Sounds like the latch in the shifter under the dash is broken...it's letting it go into park on the bottom shaft and still letting it go into a forward gear on the top shaft...Jim or I will come up with a picture of it...and Of course B&D will be along to tell you where to get a manual....

If it's the latch it's an easy fix...pull the cowl and look at the shift drums/quadrants, they are at the end of the shift handle... the latch moves left or right to hold one quadrant while the other one moves..work the shift handle left and right as you watch...you can see the latch..
