4020 steering wheel extends at startup

Just wondering if anybody ran into this and what causes it. It comes out about a quarter of an inch at startup. Doesn't leak and seems to work ok other than maybe a little drift going down the road. Opened it up tonight, just really dirty in there, valves a little worn. Going to surface the seats and install new valves, springs, seals, and balls. Did find a ball on the top side of the piston the same size as the two in the piston itself. Must have been in there awhile not quite round anymore and not as metallic as the other balls. thx chris

Was the snap ring intact under the steering wheel that holds the large washer over the seals at the top of the housing? I have seen them worn almost through the washer which will give the steering shaft excessive end play. When shut off the weight of the wheel pushes it down. When running, the pressure of the return oil will push the shaft up. Bottom line, steering wheel being pushed up is normal due to back pressure inside the housing, but should not be a noticeable movement maybe .050". 1/4 inch is about 1/4 inch too much end play.

Snapring is good, can't see how this would affect what I have since the whole shaft is coming up snapring, washers and all. thanks

The roll pin may look good on each end but still be sheared in the middle, that is what keeps it from pushing up...

With everything "as it should be" the shaft should not have much end play to be able to move up and down. Roll pin on bottom and snap ring on top keep it tight.

Chris,
mine has done that forever also. thought about digging into it but too many other things pop up to work on. has never bothered anything on mine that I can tell.

Cliff, it just hit me walking out to the shop, if I just add a washer or two to the top side under the snapring, this will take up the endplay I have in the shaft and it should be good. Right? Was WAY overthinking this. thanks chris

Once I slipped the shaft back in the housing I seen what happened. The snapring was sprung enough along with a worn groove on the shaft, that the snapring was right against the steering wheel allowing all the endplay. So a new shaft from A&I, with new snapring and washers it should be good to go. Sorry for all the troubles guys and thanks again. chris
