Can a 3 point be put on M John deere

Friend wants to know if a 3 point can be installed on his M tractor. He wants to put a rear mount bush hog on it if possible.

Yes, I had an M with the 3 PT adapter and it worked well. Just need to put an ORC on the PTO.

I have a 3-point hitch on my M and run a 4-ft rotary cutter with it. Plenty of power but it wouldn't want to lift a lot more than that. As said, an over-running clutch on the PTO is a definite must-have. Don't worry about not having a live PTO - as long as you have an ORC this really isn't a problem. Take a close look at the driveline length after the ORC is installed. I had to trim a few inches off of mine to prevent it from bottoming out when the mower was raised.

If I recall correctly on the after market kits the toplink mounts where the belt pulley would go and no backing up with the implement down or it can crack the housing. Its been a long time since I read the instructions in the kit. bill

Yes, take a look at the photo below of "Sparky" our 51M.

Agree with [b:654c4848f0]bill mart[/b:654c4848f0] that "[i:654c4848f0]the toplink mounts where the belt pulley would go[/i:654c4848f0]".

We did not remove the belt pulley because we have no need to raise the Bush Hog ATH 600 finishing mower.

If we ever decide to remove the belt pulley, then the photo below displays the type of bracket that would be installed.

Take a look at the bracket for the top link on "Sam" our 51MT.

Hope this helps.

On an M most of these kits the top link will bend up your seat frame if lifted up. They fit better on an MT. I made my own hitch more like a 2 point fast hitch with a built in 3 point adapter. For rotary mower an over running clutch would be nice but will also make the pto angles worse. You really don't need one as an M has good enough brakes when working right to stop it.

Gentlemen, Thank you for sharing the 3pt conversion. My son would like to do this for his MT. His biggest issue now is new rear wheels. Anyone know where we can find some 34" x 10" without breaking the bank? His are rusted too bad to use.

I built an actual 3pth for my M. I looked at the little goofy things people put on the end of the quiktach arm, but wasn't a fan of that style. It only cost me something like $150 for everything, plus an afternoon to build and install it. It's easy to change over to the original hitch. I built my mount for the top link. I built it a little longer than most. I don't have too much trouble with it colliding with my seat. Let me know if you wanna see my take on it. All parts that I bought were from Tractor Supply up here in Ontario.

No idea why anyone would bother trying. It will be cheaper, work better and be safer to find a slant steer 420 with live pto.

I've never found a CHEAP 420, and certainly not a slant steer around here. I paid $1500 for a nice running M, and it does everything I ask it to. If I was gonna do actual farm work with it, I'd buy something bigger and newer.
