how do I test to see if the transmission pump is working without splitting?

What is your tractors serial number(below or above 266750)? Have you checked frt hyd pump drive coupler? With hyd filter removed,5 gallon bucket under opening,start & run engine for 15 seconds and there should be a little over a gallon of oil in bucket.

I will try that. Cleaned the screen, not bad, changed the oil, looked
good. will try the bucket test today. Coupler working. When I put
fluid in the reservoir up front everything works for a little while.

If your tractor has a hyd reservoir by radiator it must have a serial number above 266750 which would indicate it has closed center hyd's. With 3 pt raised,engine running look in hyd filler hole behind seat for spraying oil. Does steering valve get hotter than other hyd components? Does tractor have a frt end loader?

hello, pull out the hyd. filter relief valve to see if it is stuck open, normal closed, the valve inside the cartridge is touching the split pin at the end. the pto drive shaft from the clutch also drives the trans. pump. does your pto work? if not maybe the pto disk has shucked the splined hub, IF you have live pto, [2 stage foot clutch control] OR IF you have independent pto [pto lever between the gear shift levers] then maybe the spline drive in the pressure plate maybe shucked out.
