6030 or 4620 revisited

Ok it took me a little bit but I finally got the pictures of the tractor we have. I thought the 6030 was the only one with the air breather at the rear of the
hood but I saw a 4620 the other day and stopped and it had a lid or hatch back there also so I stopped and looked at it. Someone had wanted pictures of the one we
have so I took some to post. Here they are and maybe this will clear things up. Serial number on mine is 4620 but it has the round air breather on it like a 6030.

AFAIK, ALL 4620's had the lid of the dry air filter protruding through the back of the hood.

From viewing oldtymer's 2nd photo I'm going to state tractor is a 4620 because RS covers have angles whereas 6030 RS covers are rounded. See 4620 parts photo below.

I may be wrong but I think the tractor in the pictures is a earlier model 4520 because it has no intercooler on it. I believe the last 400?? or so 4520's had an intercooler and then all of the 4620's had an intercooler. All of which would have the air cleaner at the rear of the hood. That looks very similar to the 4520 that I had but mine had the intercooler. Good looking tractors!

It's a 4520. I can tell because of the steering lines. On the 4520, the steering lines go forward over top of the timing cover and then under the radiator hose. On the 4620, the lines go straight down thru a notch in the block and tuck inside the left frame rail.

All 4520s had no intercooler from the factory, but MANY were updated through a factory recall program to deal with the early problematic air cleaner. In short, it is not uncommon to find a 4520 with an intercooler.

The parts book list the intercooler for the high serial number 4520's. But many 4520 were updated. The one we have was and I would not have bought it if it had the 4520 engine. Tom

Interesting... are there any operators manuals or sales literature that show an intercooler on a 4520??? I'd never heard of any leaving the factory in that fashion.

It has a round air filter sticking a little above the hood like a 6030 which is why I thought it was one. That and as I said I didn't know another model had the filter there.... We sold it to a guy thinking it was a 6030 and he looked up serial number and said 4520 or 4620 ( can't remember which he said right now). Guess it pays to research alot ... :) he got a heck of a deal

Can you help me understand this better? You bought a tractor thinking it was a 6030 and the seller did not correct you or did not know?. Then you sold the tractor as a 6030 and the buyer didnt know the difference either until buyer ran the serial number? Then thinking further back the seller you got it from didnt know and neither did that persons buyer? Or somebody did somewhere and didnt correct a buyer?

Huh......

I also find it odd that someone couldn't tell the difference. There are a lot of major difference between 6030 and 45/4620s just from their initial appearance. 6030 has a round hole in the hood and the filter canister sticks up 2-3 inches thru the hole. 45/4620 has a square hole in the hood and even though the filter is round, it sits well below the top of the hood. There is a fiberglass door in the hood that covers the filter, but the hinges are flimsy and often the doors are missing. The 6030 has a 531 turbo/intercooled engine with a huge inline bosch pump. The 4520 you show is basically a 4020 motor (404) with a tiny roosa master pump sitting vertically toward the rear of the engine.
