Jd G timming mark

I am replacing the crankshaft in a
G jd .When I removed the old crank
it had timming marks on the crank
gear and the replacement doesn't
have marks . I was going to use
the old gear as a reference but it
has disappeared. I was wondering
dering if anyone possibly had a
gear with marks on it and could
tell me how many teeth from the
key way the mark is.

they never had marks originally. the timing marks are on the flywheel, as in left hand exhaust open. any marks on cam or crank gear may or may not be the same on any two tractors.Paul

It's pretty small but I bet it is there. I've never seen one that wasn't marked.

Back on 01-27-2003 "CLOONEY" posted he below info.

JD-G, start by looking closely for timing marks on the cam gear & crank gear. There might be either factory marks, or marks from a previous repair still there.
~If you can't find any marks, start by installing the flywheel in the correct position on the crankshaft, then turn the flywheel until the [LH exhaust open] on the flywheel is lined with the case mark [at 3 o'clock behind the flywheel & at same height as the crank center], then try to install the cam so the L/H exhaust lobe lift ramp is just starting to contact the lifter & move it a little [watch the cam rotation direction]. Then with the cam bearings in place, turn the flywheel backwards about ? turn or so, then position & zero a dial indicator on the L/H exhaust lifter, then turn the flywheel in the forward direction & watch the indicator, when it gets to .020" the [L/H exhaust open] on the flywheel should be within 1" or so of the case mark. If it isn't, move the cam position in relation to the crank & re-set the indicator to zero on the base circle on the L/H exhaust lobe & measure again. If you are careful when installing the cam so the L/H exhaust lobe is just starting to move the L/H exhaust lifter with the flywheel at [L/H exhaust open] lined up with the case mark you probably won't have to change the cam to crank gear position, or maybe only move it once.....

Possibly the above can help you?

I was able to get it timed by using a dial indicator and the flywheel marks. Thanks for the help. I have been working on tractors for 20 plus years and this is my first time working on a 2 cylinder jd engine and I am learning a lot .

There was marks on the crankshaft gear that was on the crankshaft that I removed but it was loose on the crank. I ended up replacing the crankshaft and the gear that came with it was not marked.Sometime in the last year that it has been apart the old gear was lost and I didn't have it for a reference. I have come to find out that some never had marks and have to be timed with a dial indicator as John Deere d posted.

The early Unstyled G's did not have a timing mark. I have been thru this before. I had to set the valve timing with a dial indicator and the marks on the flywheel.
