4440 dead batteries

Been pulling in loads of beans with the 4440 for several days. Today, it just clicks - batteries dead. I don't think we left anything on overnight? The batteries are 3 years old. They have water in them. Any ideas on why, or what to check? Thanks

Charge them then disconnect one battery cable and touch it against the post. If you get a small spark you have a short somewhere or you left something on.

When I was in school our one instructor always said the FIRST thing to look for on a no crank complaint is the fan belt. I have always remembered that......

Are they dead for sure, did it start once jumping/charging? Tractor is in park and or neutral start wiring didn't get knocked off? just curious

I had the same thing happen with my Chevy truck. One of the diodes in the alternator failed during my last usage, and drained the battery overnight. The suggestion to disconnect the batteries, recharge, and then check for a short is good. However, connecting a voltmeter between the cable and the battery to check for a short, would be a safer practice than possibly igniting the hydrogen gas that can be around the recently recharged batteries by looking for a spark. Any voltage shown with all of the switches turned off would indicate a short.

Ditto what Jim stated. Possibility of battery blowing up in one's face is not good.
